This chameleon was first a place of worship and then its function was replaced by Iglesia del Pilar. It was converted into a hospital during the British Invasions in 1806, an academy of art in 1815 and then an asylum until it was re-built by the architect Juan Buschiazzo in 1858. Inaugurated in 1896, the National Museum of Fine Arts houses 32 exhibit halls with state of the art technology for both traditional and multimedia shows. The National Museum for Decorative Art was the former palatial mansion of the wealthy Argentine Errázuriz Alvear family. The inside of this building exposes the French-inspired architectural plans and embellishments. The Floris Genérica, known to foreigners as "the huge metal flower" is located in the center of the United Nations Plaza on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta between the Facultad de Derecho (University of Law) and the MALBA museum. In 2002, architect Eduardo Catalano erected the flower as a gift to the city. This flower, said to be a symbol of all flowers (generica) stands as a symbol of nature and technology.
