Designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti, the Palacio Barolo (Barolo Palace) is one of Buenos Aires' most fantastic architectural beasts. Commissioned by a powerful Argentinean textile tycoon, the palace was completed in 1923. While the original purpose was to house Dante Alighieri's ashes, the plan did not come to fruition and now is mainly used as an office building. The Palacio Barolo was carefully designed to include references to the Divine Comedy and was the tallest construction in Latin America for many years. Visitors should not miss the incredible view from the 24th floor. Free tours available. Subte Peru Linea A

Plaza de Mayo (May Square) was founded by Juan de Garay in 1580 and has always been a symbol of Buenos Aires politics. The city's first monument, Pirámide de Mayo, is located in the center of the plaza along with fountains and benches. Plaza de Mayo is surrounded by many important governmental and financial buildings such as the Casa Rosada (Pink House), Banco de la Nación (Nation's Bank), and Cabildo (Town Hall). Visitors should note that importance of this location for the group known as Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (Mothers of May Square).
