Caballito is a beautiful, understated and a lower-profile district (barrio) of the City of Buenos Aires. This is the geographical centre of the City of Buenos Aires, but do not be fooled, it is not in the city centre. You find Caballito on the west side of the city, about 15 minutes from the Obelisk in El Centro, Buenos Aires.
Well connected to all points of interest, bus routes 126 and 5 lead to El Centro (downtown) in 20 minutes, the 141 to Palermo in 20 minutes and route 92 to Recoleta 30 minutes. The subte (subway) stations, along Line A, are Caballito, Flores and Rio de Janiero. Time between stations is less than 4 minutes and take 10 minutes to arrive to El Centro (downtown). Please note these times are estimates and depend on time of day and road traffic. A quick tip, plan breakfast and your high tea at peak transport times as it stinks!
The name Caballito is said to come from the horse-shaped (Caballo) weather vane from a local pulperia (meaning resto-bar, do not expect Octopus); Caballito means "Little horse".
Buenos Aires residents first considered this district a weekend haven and you can find some architectural monsters amongst the luxurious country style houses located on Rivadavia Avenue. Wine baron Ambrosio Placido Lezica´s house is one of the most important of these old colonial style homes and it was featured in the creation of Rivadavia Park in 1928. Another green space is Primera Junta Park, where you will find a replica of the weather vane.
Caballito is also home to one of the biggest faculties of the University of Buenos Aires, Philosophy and Letters. This popular faculty, known for its spirited students, latterly adds a youthful bohemian edge to this traditional and well-healed residential barrio.
Caballito has something for everyone there are numerous places of interest; the English District with beautiful British style Fin de Siècle architecture; the Ferro Carril Oeste football Club (or Verdolaga); the Historical Tramway museum of Buenos Aires; and the old Mercado del Progreso (Market of Progress).
Old Buenos Aires apartment buildings and fantastic row houses on tree lined avenues offer exceptional accommodation that is great value for money, particularly if you are staying for a while.
