Catch the train to Tigre and enjoy a day on the river sightseeing. Tigre is a city in Buenos Aires Province (provincia), situated northwest end of Greater Buenos Aires, just 32 km away from El Obelisco. This leafy, waterside, weekend retreat lies on the Paraná Delta, bordered to the north by an important branch of the Paraná River, the Paraná de las Palmas River, and to the east by the Río de la Plata. The Luján River, flowing southeast into the Río de la Plata, divides this region, creating a maze of waterways and islands given over to first-class waterside living, agriculture and light industry. These navigable waterways connect the major rivers of the region making Tigre an attractive resort for water sports such as yachting, rowing, and fishing. Visitors to the area often enjoy cruises on tour boats or taxi launches. Each March and November, regattas are held on the Luján River. The Naval Museum was established in 1892 to exhibit ship artefacts, models, navigational instruments, and paintings of Argentine naval battles.
Besides Tigre, other major towns include Carupá, Don Torcuato, General Pacheco, and Benavídez. The Parana River, its name means 'father of the sea.' in Guarani an ancient and indigenous tongue, which is still widely spoken in Paraguay and some parts of Argentina, runs 4000 km and spawns numerous fertile silt islands and sub-streams on its course.
The colonization of this region started sometime after 1580 and the second founding of Buenos Aires by Don Juan de Garay. Tigre was not established until 1611, the name is derived from ‘tigres’ or Yaguaretes (South American tiger) hunted to extinction in this area, but still found in the borders of the province of Corrientes and Brazil.
Tigre is great for a day shopping, eating, walking and boating or fantastic for long weekends away from Buenos Aires’ hectic pace of life.
